There's lots of good stuff about Britain, just not TV anymore. There's lots of bad stuff too - rising bills, Orwellian surveillance, high taxes and long working hours. No wonder we want to retreat into escapist activities!

I agree wholeheartedly with you! I'm living in France at the moment, and I never shy away from making a hearty English breakfast whenever I get my hands on baked beans!

The only thing is... as I'm always cooking to eat with French companions, I can't make it any earlier than midday! The only time I can serve up a good English breakfast is as a main meal in the daytime or evening - it's just not sweet enough to be stomached over here any earlier!

I love your list - and I don't think you'd hear 'the English have an admirable society' over here either! I have heard something recently quite "shocking" though - a French friend who wants to go to London to try fish and chips! On this jaw-dropping revelation, my (French) boyfriend and I just stared at him: 'You want to do WHAT!?!'

You seem racked with post-colonial guilt. Well, here's a superficial take on things to lift your spirits. Had England not invaded Australia, all but killed off it's indigenous folk in a rabid soiree of institutionalised genocide and set up a quaint little rat-infested colony, my folks may never have been drawn out there from the Motherland. Which means, God save me, I would never have been born and Aussie but instead - a Brit. So thank you, England. That's one to you.

Skewered by a fork in the teste, hmm? What have you been up to then? T
hough I must agree on some notes - born and bred though I was as an Aussie, I too have endured some horrendous public drunkeness - my own - at which point I always feel obliged to point out that my bloodline is pure Mother England - and then people nod sympathetically and understand why I have such an affinity for sleeping in gutters.
As for the national health service though - I'd love to see a comparative study on the state of Aus vs Eng hospitals. Have you Brits got preggers women given birth in the dunnies cos there's no beds left?

I missed those three - I was far too old to have seen them I suppose :-(

My memories:
Trumpton ("Hugh, Pugh, Barney, McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub")
Andy Pandy
The Flowerpot Men ("Little weeed!")
Jackanory ("tell a story")
Blue Peter (Not sure John Noakes ever did really say "Get down Shep!" I always wanted to make one of their advent wreaths but my mother had something against real candles, so I had to make do with watching them light them on the show.)
The Magic Roundabout ("Time for bed said Zebedee". I used to have a record Jasper Carrott recorded that sold for his version of the Magic Roundabout on the B side.)
Crystal Tips and Alistair

What was the one with Kiki the frog? You're far too young to know, I'm sure . . . or to remember any of the above. I'll shut up and go away now!

I agree with a lot of your comments - but they certainly DON'T do all the road repairs here in the USA during the night. In one city I used to commute through, they were working on the Interstate highway every day from 7 a.m. till 2 p.m. or so. The morning commute was hell! The were working on the same stretch of road for over 2 years - may still be for all I know, but fortunately I haven't had to do that particular drive for a while. They did stop for a few months for the New England winter though. The snow doesn't bring everything to a grinding halt over here as it does in the UK, but it does limit some things.
